Tips.

Tips If you would like to make an individual or unique clock, design your dial to look different, but eye catching. Have a shaped dial and use an inner ring (called a chapter ring)  for the time display. You could use Roman numerals VII, IX etc instead of Arabic numerals 8, 9 etc. Try Roman at the quarters and Arabic for the others.

But you do not have to use numbers, you could use signs or symbols. Phases of the moon for instance, Full  moon for 12 a half moon at 6 etc. Or a combination of both Sun and Moon.

If you have a name or phrase of twelve letters, then use the letters in place of numerals,
i.e. our clock could have V E A L S H O Y L A K E  on the dial.

Or small portraits of yourself, favorite star or best friend. But remember we look at the clock many times during the day and the clock should last for years.

a piece of wood can make an excellent looking clock, particularly if you pay attention to the pattern of the grain. The use of a lathe would be most helpful, you could then have a slight dome effect (convex) or cut away the inside for a concave dial. If you have a different level for the chapter ring and then a thinner center, this makes a clock that is pleasing to look at. Make a note of the spindle length and the will determine the maximum thickness at the center, taking care not to make any part of the dial too thick, as a pair of hands must pass over the dial.

If you do not have a dial, try an old 45 rpm record (make certain it's not collectable), or you could use an unwanted CD. Either can be used as a base to paint or past a picture or design on to, or just have your old record title on view.

For a metal dial and the tuning on a lathe, you will only require a thin gauge. If you make part of your dial very smooth, you can also make part full of grooves to give a different look for the minute zone.

If you wish to draw onto your dial all the hour and minutes markings, you can purchase a reusable disk with all 60 minutes and 12 hours ready to mark off onto your dial. This will cost about £5.00.

a far more effective and original idea would be to just have a vertical line and a horizontal line, crossing at the centre hole.  This would give the exact location of the quarters i.e. 3,6,9 and 12. Before drilling the center hole, a compass or dividers can make the marking out of the dial an easy operation. Just think of the dial as a circle and divide it up into 4 or 12 segments.

You can colour code the minute zones. 5 minutes = Red: 15 minutes = Green: 30 minutes = Blue. So that 10 to the hour would be indicated by a Blue, Green, and Red spot.

The hands supplied are either, a black plastic type material or a light-weight, coloured alloy. No-mater what colours they are supplied in, you can repaint them to enhance the looks of your clock.
If you wish you can past a light weight material onto the hands to form a shape or design that contrasts with the dial.

We also sell clock oil at £5.50 a bottle and the famous Swiss Watchmaker Penknife for £76.Over 20 watch repairers tools on one knife. You can order screwdrivers, any size any quantity. If you require an watch makers eye glass, we have a range from £4.
