The name VEALS most probably comes from DE VILLE, maybe from before the Norman invasion, but Harry N. Veals, eldest son of Henry and Emily, together with his three brothers and three sisters, they all hail from Exmouth in Devon. Back in 1788, Edward Veals was born and in 1809 he Married Elizabeth Hart, they had six children, James, father of Henry was the eldest. About the time, Alexander Graham Bell invented the Telephone, Henry Veals came up to live in Birkenhead together with his father James. Later they brought the family to the then sleepy fishing village of Hoylake. The elder members of the Veals family started work as a ships butcher in the thriving shipping industry of Liverpool.
As the "Newfangled Electric Railway" extended out of Birkenhead and through to Hoylake, the village expanded rapidly. One of the many new buildings was that of 37 and 39 Market Street. Built as a first class butchers and bakers (although nothing to do with the Veals ).
The bakery business moved away after only a few years and the Jewellers of Carvell and Binner moved in from the old part of Town. Unfortunately, shortly after this, one owner died. Later on the other partner decided to retire. The staff, not wishing to become unemployed, decided that they would take over the business, this was about the year 1907, they then renamed it,
H. N. Veals & Son.Mr. Harry Newport Veals, his unusual middle name could have come from the fashion of that time in giving your child the middle name relating to the place of conception. Some time after the end of the Second World War, Mr. A.E. Veals, Eddy to all his friends. A well known and well respected member of the local community, who was often helping the local Y.M.C.A. with amateur dramatics (the same place that Glenda Jackson M.P. first "took to the boards") also taking his drum kit of to an evening "gig" on many a night. He was one of two sons and had two sisters. They all worked in the shop for some time but it was Eddy, with the help of Rene his wife, who took over as sole proprietor and ran this business until his retirement, when the current owner, Randle T.J. Tinkler took over the running of,
H.N.Veals & Son.As Carvell and Binner an established Jewellers, moved to, 39 Market Street about the 1880s we can say, Watch, Clock and Jewellery repairs, restores and sales have taken place on the same premises in three consecutive centuries.
The dormitory town of Hoylake derives its name from the Hoyle Lake, (Hoyle is an old English expression for a lake at or near to a headland) it's now many years since this part of the coast was the important local deep water anchorage for all boats. Soldiers for Ireland embarked from this one time busy fishing town. It is also believed that the remains of a Roman signalling station are off the coast of north Wirral. Yet to be discovered? This part of Wirral is not entered in the Doomsday Book and it is thought it was because the Vikings were if full control of this part of the then know world. Hoylake and the surrounding area are well worth a visit, particularly if you are interested in Roman, Viking or Iron Age History. We are situated in the North West corner of the Wirral Peninsular, (between the Rivers Mersey and Dee) and still has a fine beach with a panoramic view of Liverpool Bay, North Wales and the Lancashire coastline. This area has Sand Yachting, Wind Surfing, Sailing and Golf. For the technical minded the business of H.N.Veals & Son is approximately 53 Degrees 23 Minutes 45 Seconds North and 3 Degrees 10 Minutes and 5 Seconds West on the A513. Easily accessible from the Motorway network, just look for the M53 & M56. However, if you are thinking of a visit, you had better hurry, as we are only 10 meters above see level.
Unfortunately, from the Isle of Lewis to Bristol and from the East coast to the Isle of Man. There may only be as few as 25 people in the U.K Who have the name Veals. As with most names past down, time and miss spelling produce a few variations. Therefore names with and without an S and sometimes an extra E are most likely from the same original family.
