The hallmark is your guarantee that any item is what it is purporting to be. This is the oldest consumer protection, dating back to 1300. In 1973 the new hallmarking act decreed that from 1975 all assay offices would use the same letter, starting with "a" Now no longer used under E.U Law. Now the Convention on hallmarks accepted the same standards throughout Europe. If you would like to know more about your hallmark, click and send us as much information as you can.

All goods imported into the U.K must have an appropriate standard mark as displayed below. During the Queens Golden Jubilee Year, all goods hallmarked that year did have an extra mark, the Queens head. Only the 4th time in the history of hallmarking has a Golden Jubilee hallmark been used.

For all Gold, Silver and platinum articles manufactured in the British Isles the following assay Office Marks have been used.

all U.K Assay Offices will use these Standard Marks on items that are made in the U.K the Hallmark will consist of;

  A Standard Mark, the assay Office Mark & the Date Letter.
Date letter now discontinued.
If the manufacturer has a registered sponsor's mark this can be included.

British Standard Mark for precious Metals.

As a general principal, the latest laws on hallmarking are, that if an article is above a certain weight (Silver = 7.8 g,: Gold = 1g,: platinum =0.5g) then it must be hallmarked before it can be described as Silver, Gold or Platinum.
